Description
This is a barn located near Morry House in East Sutton, dating from the late 15th century or early 16th century. Originally a three-bay structure, it was altered and extended by two bays in the late 18th century and early 19th century, during which an L-shaped five-bay cart lodge and outshut were added. The barn underwent significant restoration in the late 20th century.
The barn is timber-framed and sits on a brick plinth, with some 20th-century brickwork up to the midrail. Above this, it is plastered, featuring visible curved tension braces and dorm braces on the east elevation. The north elevation is partially weather-boarded, while the south elevation includes a weatherboarded outshut from the late 18th or early 19th century and a hipped cart entrance with a double door. The roof is now covered in corrugated iron.
Inside, the barn has jowled posts, but the tie beams have been moved from their original positions and no longer feature arched braces. The rafters do not include a ridge piece, and there is a collar beam supporting about two-thirds of the original structure. The 18th-century extension of two bays is located between the original bays, with the end bay containing several reused timbers and bolted knees. The interior also has a midrail, diagonal braces to the wall plate, and staggered purlins in the roof. A later ridge piece has been inserted, and the north elevation features a plank door with pintle hinges. The outshuts include stock pens.
