Description
The Blue House is a house that has been converted into cottages, dating from the 15th century with early 17th-century alterations. It features a timber frame with rendered infilling and a plain tile roof. The building is designed in the Wealden style, with an open hall consisting of two unequal-length bays and a storeyed right end bay. The left end has been rebuilt as a separately framed two-bay cross-wing. It stands two storeys high on a stone plinth, with both the right and left end bays jettied, supported by moulded dragon posts that return at the ends. The hall and the ground floor of the end bays have broadly spaced studding, while the first floor of each end bay is rendered. There is a small arch brace at the right end of the flying wall plate, and solid brackets are located under the central tie-beam and under the left end post of the hall. The roof is hipped to the left with a gablet and hipped towards the right end, which has a lower ridge over the right end bay. There are small projecting stacks at both ends and a multiple brick ridge stack at the junction of the hall and the left wing. The fenestration is irregular, featuring five leaded casements: one three-light in the left bay, one two-light in the left hall bay, two two-light in the broader right hall bay, and one three-light in the right end bay. A ribbed door is located at the right end of the hall. Inside, the building has exposed framing, a moulded and brattished end of the hall beam, and a moulded crown post in the hall. The wing has a side purlin roof, and an inserted hall floor dated 1610, along with a plank-and-muntin partition, likely from the early 17th century.
