Description

Sandcastles is a house located on Beach Street in Deal, likely dating from the 18th century, but it was refronted in the early to mid-19th century. The building is constructed of brick and covered in stucco, featuring a mainly tiled roof with a hip at the front and a gable at the rear, along with a brick chimneystack. A narrow slate roof masks the hip on the north side.

The house is three storeys high and one bay wide. On the north or principal front, the second floor has a six-pane sash window. The first floor features a larger 20-pane sash window with horns, set within a moulded architrave and topped with a moulded cornice. There is a plat band between the ground and first floors. The ground floor includes a six-pane sash window on the left side, which has louvred wooden shutters secured by unique iron catches shaped like a sailor's head wearing a straw hat. To the right is a narrow doorcase with a cornice and moulded architrave, and the building has a deep plinth. The south or rear elevation has a projecting gable with a brick chimneystack.

The interior has not been inspected. According to the 1872 Ordnance Survey map, No. 175 was shown as being in separate ownership from the adjoining properties. More recently, Nos. 173 and 175 were owned together.

No. 175 is designated for its historical significance as part of an 18th-century house alongside Nos. 171 and 173. Its early to mid-19th-century stuccoed front, which retains sash windows, contributes to its seaside character, particularly highlighted by the unusual iron shutter catches. The building also has strong group value with several listed buildings in a designated conservation area.
