Description
North Hill House is a house that appears to date from the 18th century, although it may have been re-fronted around 1860 to 1870. The building has two storeys, a basement, and an attic, with two windows that are very wide in proportion. It features a slated mansard roof with two wide dormers and tripartite sash windows. The windows have gauged shallow segmental brick arches, with some being sashes and others casements. The basement has a stuccoed plinth, and there is a heavy classical porch with square columns and three steps leading to a half-glazed double door. The front is made of red brick and has a cornice made of moulded and diagonal bricks. On the north side, the second floor has a canted bay with early 19th-century sash windows that include glazing bars. The first floor has a three-light replaced sash with glazing bars, and the ground floor features a canted bay with a cornice. Inside, the house shows evidence of being built around 1700, with a long range of segmental-vaulted brick cellars extending south beneath the adjacent houses. There were considerable interior alterations made around 1840. The house is included for its group value with No 43 and Nos 47 to 57 (odd).
