Description

A pair of cottages and an old forge, dating to the 17th century with a 18th-century core, altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. The cottages are timber-framed and brick-built, with a thatched roof and a slated smithy. They consist of two bays, with a 20th-century bay added to the left-hand cottage and a single-storey smithy attached at the right end. The left-hand cottage has planking with inserted lights under a thatched hood in each bay, along with a two-light casement and a two-light eyebrow dormer. The right-hand cottage features a six-panel, top-lit door under a thatched hood in the centre and small 16-pane sash windows under segmental arches. An eyebrow dormer above the left bay has a horizontal sliding sash, and a large single casement in the eyebrow dormer to the right. The roof is half-hipped, with a ridge piece and a large central stack between the cottages. The smithy has double doors and three-light casements with shutters. Its roof is hipped, with a stack built up against the cottage. The cottages were once home to J M Jagger, a local poet and historian.
