Description

The Forge is a cottage, originally two separate dwellings, dating from the 18th century with extensions from the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed from locally sourced stone that has been cut and squared, with rubble used for the extensions and brick on the upper east gable. The main roof is covered with Double Roman clay tiles between coped gables, while the main extension features Welsh slate with a bargeboarded overhang.

The building is two stories high and has four bays. The first bay is a 20th-century extension with a modern casement window below and an early leaded casement window above, which appears to have been reset. The second bay contains a steel casement window below and a small casement window above. The third and fourth bays have small pane casements below and early leaded casements above. The lower windows feature exposed timber lintels. There is a blocked doorway between the first and second bays, and a full-height straight joint between the third and fourth bays, leading to a plain beaded, recessed doorway that is accessed by two steps.

On the east gable, there are 20th-century casements and a doorway set within a recessed segmental arch. Adjacent to this is the old forge, which dates from the 19th century. The forge has a gabled front with a corrugated asbestos cement sheet roof and is also two stories high with two bays. It features a rustic band course and casements with overlapping panes. The doorway has a segmental arch and currently has 20th-century double garage doors installed. Above the doorway, there is a datestone reading '1--5', and inside the forge, the furnace arch is visible. The main interior of the cottage has not been seen.
