Description

A row of three cottages, likely dating from the 18th century, is located on the north side of High Street in West Coker. The cottages are built of local stone rubble, with a thatched roof; the roof has an abutment to the west and a half-hip to the east. Two brick chimney stacks are also present. The low two-story row has six bays, with an additional extension to the east, forming part of number 18. Number 18 occupies the first two bays. Most windows are small-paned casements with exposed timber lintels. A plain doorway, recessed and with a 20th-century glazed door, is set two steps up. Number 16 occupies the third bay, with a boarded door in a heavy frame, rising three steps, and a three-light casement window below. The lower part of this window has small panes, while the upper part is an earlier casement with leaded panes and an iron opening mechanism set into the thatch. Number 14 occupies the remaining three bays, and displays a variety of casement windows, including a small shop window in the lower bay with exposed timber lintels and a wall plate. A 20th-century door in a recessed area is situated between bays four and five. Attached to the east gable of number 14 is an early 20th-century workshop. The workshop has a rubble ground floor wall with a glazed door and casement window, and a fully glazed timber framework above. The roof is a cast iron sheet semi-mansard with a wide curved ridge. The East gable of the workshop is open below and glazed, with doors above and enhances the village scene as a survivor of a disappearing building type.
