Description
School Farmhouse is a farmhouse that dates back to the 16th century, with an early 18th-century encasement and early 20th-century extensions and remodels. It has a timber-frame core, with brick encasing and additions, topped by an old plain tile roof. The building is two stories high and features an irregular seven-bay main block, which contains the original 16th-century Wealden house, positioned end-on to the road. At the rear, there is a double pile wing from the 18th and 19th centuries.
The front of the farmhouse has a 19th-century panel door located in the center bay, framed by an 18th-century moulded solid frame. This door is topped by a flat hood supported by carved brackets and sits under a rubbed brick arch. The center bay also features a three-light casement window, with a single casement window on one side and a two-light casement in the other bay. The first floor has seven casement windows and is marked by a raised band and wide bearded eaves. The roof is hipped with a gablet, and the road end has a hip that steps with a short length of ridge halfway up. There is a projecting external end stack, and a 20th-century lean-to at the far end.
Inside, parts of the frame are exposed. Behind the door is an early 20th-century hall, and at the road end, there is a dining room featuring 18th-century painted panelling. Behind these rooms is a much-restored late 17th-century staircase, which includes panelling below, turned balusters, a moulded handrail, and square newels. The far bays contain a drawing room.
