Description
The Palace Cinema, built in 1912, is an early picture palace that has undergone minor alterations over the years. The street facade features two storeys, which are separated by a later canopy. The upper part is finished in stucco and consists of five bays, complete with a balustered parapet. It has a central segmental feature that includes a circular light, along with a cornice, frieze, and rusticated pilasters. There is a first-floor band and coupled openings that are separated by a thin pilaster. The ground floor has a solid wall with irregular cambered openings. The main highlight of the building is its interior, which includes a foyer, a projecting kiosk (now partially obscured by later woodwork), a staircase, and an auditorium with an elliptical barrel-vaulted ceiling. The auditorium also features a bow-fronted balcony with moulded front panels supported by two cast-iron colonettes, as well as decorative plasterwork around the proscenium.
