Description
The Independent Chapel, originally a cinema, was built in 1915. It features a combination of faience and roughcast render, with a late 20th-century brick wall on the right side. The building has a half-hipped roof covered in Welsh slate and a rectangular auditorium behind a recessed entrance and lobby located in the left-hand corner. The exterior is designed in a Baroque style and presents as two storeys.
The central bay of the front elevation is flanked by broad rusticated pilasters and features two elaborately moulded circular windows, with similar oval windows on either side, all set within roughcast panels. Above the central bay is a segmental-arched pediment that displays the words 'Salford Cinema AD 1915' within a moulded segmental panel. The ground floor includes doorways at the center and right-hand side, with paired rectangular windows in between, and the main entrance is set in the radiused left-hand corner behind a porch supported by four Ionic columns beneath a curved cornice on consoles. Above this is a swagged frieze, an elaborate balustrade, and an open cupola on six columns with decorated capitals.
The interior has been significantly altered but the building remains an important example of early cinema architecture.
