Description

The Salford Education Offices, built in 1895 by Woodhouse and Willoughby, are a notable example of education offices designed in the French Renaissance style. The building features a facade faced in faience with a granite plinth and a Welsh slate roof. It stands three storeys tall with a high basement, and its facade is divided into ten bays by Ionic pilasters. Each bay contains mullioned and transomed windows.

The central entrance bay is emphasized with engaged Ionic columns and decorative panels between the storeys. To the left, there is a two-storeyed oriel window on the ground and first floors, while a slightly projecting bay to the right features leaded panes and strapwork decoration above its windows. The main entrance consists of a round-headed doorway set within an architrave, flanked by engaged Tuscan pilasters, and has a balconette above supported by moulded console brackets. A secondary doorway to the right has a semicircular head and an enriched entablature. The basement windows are adorned with wrought-iron panels.

Above the central bay, there is a projecting gable flanked by stacks that form turrets, with a shaped and enriched gablet and a leaded lantern with a wind vane behind it. The left-hand bay features a shaped gable with pinnacles, while the right-hand bay has a tower with strapwork decoration on the parapet and a leaded cupola topped with a flagpole. An openwork parapet runs between the three gables, and axial and end wall stacks display elaborate scrollwork decoration. The interior has not been inspected.
