Description

The Church of St Philip is an Anglican church built in 1825 by Sir Robert Smirke. It is designed in the Neo-classical style and constructed from ashlar, with the roof not visible. The church has an undivided plan and features an Ionic portico that projects to the south, topped by a round bell-tower.

The exterior is expressed as two storeys to accommodate a galleried interior. The symmetrical south front includes a central projecting bow-fronted porch with an Ionic colonnade and a balustraded parapet. The central door is framed by a simple Doric architrave and flanked by round-arched windows. Above the parapet, the bell-tower rises, featuring engaged fluted shafts with simplified Corinthian capitals that support a cornice. The narrower upper stage has plain pilasters beside round-arched openings, alternating between openings and blind arches, topped with a domed stone cap. There are further doors on each side of the portico, leading to three bays, with upper round-arched windows linked by a continuous string course and sill-band above square lower windows in moulded architraves.

The east end has three bays, with slightly advanced outer bays containing doorways and round-arched windows above. The central bay features a tripartite pedimented window. The north wall consists of nine bays with upper round-arched windows linked by a continuous sill-band and string course. The west front has an advanced central bay with a pediment and three doorways, the central door topped with an entablature on console brackets. Above, there are three round-arched windows, part of which are blind, with round-arched windows in the outer bays above blind lower windows.

The church is a reproduction of Smirke's Church of St Mary in Wyndham Place, London.
