Description

The building is a courthouse, constructed between 1860 and 1865. It is built of brick with a stone-faced ground storey and stone dressings, and has a low-pitched roof that is not visible. The exterior has three storeys and a three-window range facing Upper Cleminson Street. The lower storey is rusticated ashlar with a central round-arched doorway containing paired doors. Flanking the doorway are round-arched sash windows with margin lights, each arch featuring a stressed keystone. Above the ground floor is a cornice. The first floor has blind windows set within pedimented cases alternating between triangular and segmental designs, supported by console brackets. There is a continuous sill band to the low windows of the upper storey, which are set in moulded architraves. The upper storey has a small central window, with the remaining spaces blind. Stressed quoins and a modillion eaves cornice are also present. Two-banded stacks with overhanging caps are located in the front wall. A recessed bay to the right features paired round-arched sash windows on the ground floor and segmentally arched windows above. A seven-window return elevation faces Encombe Place. A doorway to the left has a fanlight and a carved keystone above the arch. The lower windows are all set in moulded recesses. Two four-pane sash windows with margin lights flank blind window spaces on the first floor; the central window space is flanked by recessed stone panels, with alternately triangular and segmental window heads. Painted Royal arms in relief are positioned above a window on the right. A sill band runs along the low attic storey windows, which are set in architraves. The building's interior has not been inspected. Attached to the Encombe Place elevation are spearhead cast-iron railings and gates, accompanied by low stone walls and piers.
