Description

Number 6 and Salford House is a former men's hostel built in 1894. The building features a U-shaped plan with three-storey accommodation wings and attics, surrounding a single-storey central entrance. The entrance has a round-headed doorway, flanked by round-headed windows on either side, with a moulded string course above. A large raised gable and parapet with moulded copings sits above, featuring a moulded terracotta heraldic panel inscribed 'Salford Corporation Model Lodging House'. Each wing has three windows on the first and second floors and four on the ground and gabled attic floors. A corbelled cornice over the second floor extends across the inner return elevations. The inner bay of each return has an advanced full-height coped gable with stressed pilasters connected by a relieving arch below the gable apex, which terminates in a stack. Salford House is connected to No. 6, the former manager's house, which is also built of red brick with a Welsh slate roof. It is three storeys high, with a gable facing the street and a sash window on each floor. The interior has not been inspected.
