Description
The Southern Railway Viaduct and Colonnade is a railway viaduct built in 1844 by engineer Sir John Hawkshaw for the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. It features cast-iron columns that support I-section girders and a cast-iron parapet. The massive cast-iron columns are adorned with capitals shaped like Egyptian lotus flowers. While the parapet is mostly plain along the colonnade, it is more decorative where it forms a bridge over New Bailey Street, featuring fluted pilasters with acanthus capitals and a frieze.
