Description
The Gainsborough Cinema, built in 1913, is a two-storey building with a stucco exterior. It features a wide ground floor entrance that has an entablature above plain piers. There are outer pilasters with ornamental heads that extend below similar pilasters, which rise to a small cornice topped with a balustrade section. Adjacent to the entrance is one window, and next to this is a matching pilaster with a higher head that supports a parapet with a segmental top, which includes a round window and decorative swags. Above the entrance, there is a three-light sash window framed by pilasters and an entablature. The interior is said to retain its original features. This building is noted as an early example of a purpose-built cinema.
