Description

St Vincent Cottage, located at 171 Castle Street in Portchester, is a building that likely dates from the 18th century, with its wings added and the entire structure re-roofed in the early 19th century. It is now divided into two dwellings. The building features painted brickwork and has a string course at the first floor height, wide bracketed eaves, and a slate roof. It stands two storeys tall and has a total of five windows. The ground floor includes two late 18th or early 19th century bay windows with cornices. All windows are sashes with glazing bars, and all except the bays have exposed frames. The central door is adorned with a pediment, pilasters, and an advanced radial fanlight, and it is a six-panelled door. The side facade, part of No 171, is constructed of flint with red brick dressings and features late 18th or early 19th century casements. A rear wing extends from this side, which is two storeys but lower in height than the front of the building. St Vincent Cottage, along with Nos 169 to 175, the gate and railings at No 169, and the street boundary wall at No 171, forms a group with Nos 162 to 174, including the street boundary wall at No 194, and Nos 182 to 190 and No 196. Nos 175 and 196 are noted as buildings of local interest.
