Description
Numbers 164A and 164B, Castle Street form an unusual pair of houses. The southern house (164A) dates to the 18th century, while the northern house (164B) is a later 19th-century addition, built in a matching style.
Number 164A has a facade of red and grey brick with rubbed red brick dressings and white stone quoins, a brick cornice, and a coped parapet. There is an old tiled roof, two hipped dormers, and an end chimney. It has three windows with unbarred sashes, and a central door featuring a good rectangular fanlight.
Number 164B is constructed of red brick with an eaves cornice, white stone dressings, and a coped parapet. It also has an old tiled roof and is two storeys high. The northern window is identical to the two-storey bay of 164A. The southern window has a stone lintel. The door is framed by a stone architrave and a dentil cornice, with heavy 19th-century detailing.
Numbers 162 to 174 (even), along with the street boundary wall at number 174, numbers 182 to 190 (even), and number 196, form a group with numbers 169 to 175 (odd), the railings and gate at number 169, and the street boundary wall at number 171.
