Description

Swanwick Barn and Cart Shed, located about 40 metres south of Rookery Farmhouse, is a barn dating from the 17th century with 18th century extensions and a cart-shed. The structure is timber-framed, with weatherboarding covered in corrugated steel sheets and a brick plinth. It features a roof with half-hipped ends, also clad in corrugated steel sheets.

The barn has a five-bay layout with opposing cart entrances leading to a central threshing floor. The southeast side includes a mid-18th century midstrey, while two additional bays were constructed on the northeast end during the 18th century, and a three-bay cart-shed was added to the southwest end.

The building is single-storey. The southeast side has a weatherboarded midstrey positioned to the left of centre, topped with a plain tile hipped roof. The northwest side features a cart entrance to the right of centre and a smaller doorway to the left of centre, with an open-fronted three-bay cart-shed on the right, which has a lower hipped roof and an outshut at the rear.

Inside, the frame is largely intact, showcasing posts, studs, a mid-rail, and short straight tension-braces. The jowled wall-posts are braced to the tie-beams, which support queen-post trusses, collars, clasped purlins, and straight wind-braces, with the common-rafter couples remaining intact. The northeast extension includes large wall-studs and straight tension-braces, while the cart-shed features long knee-braces under the wall-plates and straight braces to the tie-beams, although it has a later roof structure above.
