Description
This is a barn and attached cartshed located immediately west of number 46 on High Street, dating from the 18th century. The structure features a tall stone rubble plinth with a weatherboarded timber-frame above and a thatched roof with half-hipped gable ends. The barn has a three-bay layout with opposing cart entrances leading to a central threshing bay, and there is a one-bay cartshed at the northeast end, which includes later external stairs on the gable end leading to a loft above.
On the exterior, there are central cart entrances at both the front and rear, equipped with plank double doors. The cartshed on the right has an open front and a slightly lower thatched roof, with stone stairs on the gable end leading to a loft door in the weatherboarded gable.
Inside, the wall framing above the tall plinth includes slightly jowled posts, studs, and tension-braces. There are curved braces supporting renewed tie-beams, along with queen-struts to the collars. The roof features two tiers of tenoned butt purlins and common rafter couples, which have been renewed at the rear over the central bay. The cartshed has a partly cobbled floor, a large roughly hewn axial beam, large joists, and a two-bay loft roof that includes a collar truss and two tiers of tenoned purlins, with common rafter couples but no ridgepiece.
