Description

Barn at Barn House is likely an 18th-century timber-framed barn with a thatched roof. It has a rectangular plan, originally three bays long, with a projecting cart bay on the south side and double doors on the north side, which open onto the street. The roof is pitched with a half-hip at the east end. The timber framing is simple, using relatively light timbers and a centre rail design. The upper portions of the walls and cart bay retain weather boarding; the lower panels of the timber-framed walls are largely infilled with brick. Casement windows have been inserted on the north side, and in the east and west gables. A small, later lean-to addition is attached to the east side of the cart bay. The interior retains much of its original character, including collar and tie-beam trusses with purlins, common rafters, and broad spars to support the thatch. Some timbers have been replaced, particularly at the junction with the cart bay. The centre and west bays are open and used for general storage, while the east bay is divided off with a later 20th-century stud partition, containing an inserted stair and first floor. The barn was reportedly once part of the Mill House farm complex and was likely used for the storage and processing of cereal crops, although its capacity was limited.
