Description

This building is a threshing barn with an attached cartshed, located adjacent to the village hall on St Peter's Road. The barn is dated 1791, as indicated by the initials JH on the tiebeam near the southern cart door, and the cartshed appears to be of a similar age.

The barn is timber-framed and clad in weatherboarding, much of which is still tarred. It features a half-hipped roof covered in corrugated iron sheeting. The barn has four bays and is aligned north to south, with a cart entrance located in the penultimate bay to the north. The west side of the barn has full-height double cart doors that retain their pintle hinges, along with lower doors on the east side. Inside, there are upright posts with cut profile jowls, and the aisle posts rest on stone padstones. The wall frame includes a midrail and diagonal braces, while the roof structure consists of angled queen struts, purlins, and original rafters with a ridgepiece.

The attached cartshed, located to the northeast, is also timber-framed and clad in tarred weatherboarding. It has a hipped roof covered in corrugated iron sheeting and is one storey high with four bays. The front is open to the east and supported by square wooden piers. The roof structure of the cartshed includes tiebeams and original rafters.

Overall, this is a late 18th-century timber-framed aisled threshing barn, dated 1791, with an attached open-fronted cartshed of similar date.
