Description

A barn, dating from circa 1625 and restored in circa 1818. This timber-framed barn originally comprised five bays, with a two-bay addition added in the 19th century to form an aisle on one side. The north side of the barn is clad in red brick laid in a Sussex bond, while the remaining elevations are weatherboarded. The roof is half-hipped to the east and covered with corrugated iron. The original eastern part of the barn has a 19th-century restoration of an angled queen strut roof, featuring a ridge piece, through purlins, and roughly hewn rafters. The wall plate dates from the 17th century and includes a midrail and diagonal braces. The fourth tie beam from the east bears the date 1625, and the fifth is carved with the initials J & I H and the date 1818. The aisle posts rest on brick or concrete padstones. The 19th-century extension has an angled queen strut roof.
