Description

The Church of St Peter is a parish church located on St. Peter's Road in Hayling Island. It features a mix of Transitional and Early English architectural styles, with elements from the 19th century. The church has a nave consisting of four bays, flanked by north and south aisles, and includes a north transept at the eastern end of the nave. A small chancel is present, along with a timber-framed bell turret above the east bay of the nave and porches on both the north and south sides.

The church is notable for its prominent tile roofing, with the bell turret featuring shingled sides and a broach spire. The walls are constructed of flint and stone rubble, accented with stone dressings. The chancel has old diagonal buttresses, while 19th-century buttresses are found at the other corners and between the east windows. The chancel windows are lancets, with a triple lancet at the east end, and there are tall lancets in the transept and at the ends of the aisles. The sides of the aisles feature small Victorian lancets, and there is a Perpendicular window above the west door.

The north and south porches, dating from the 15th century, have open timber frames set on stone base walls. Inside, the church retains its original features, including pointed nave arches supported by simple cylindrical columns, most of which have cushion caps and square bases. The chancel arch is supported by half-round attached columns with moulded caps. Other interior elements include a stone tub font with a pyramid-shaped, eight-panelled wooden cover, Jacobean rails, two old benches, and two oval wall monuments dating from 1780 and 1829.
