Description

This is a late 15th-century farmhouse, extended in the 17th century and altered in the late 19th century. It is constructed of roughly-shaped limestone rubble, with some areas colourwashed and render over a timber frame on the right side. The roof is gabled and tiled with stone slates at the front and artificial stone slates at the rear. There are stone stacks at the left end and on the ridge. The original plan consisted of three rooms, with a cross wing to the right. The house is two storeys high, with a four-window front which includes the gable end of the right wing. Modern two-light windows are set above a late 19th-century half-glazed door with a timber porch, located in the second bay from the left. Other late 19th-century windows are horned sashes, set under timber lintels and flat rendered arches. A 16th-century round-headed window with hollow-chamfered edges has been re-used in the side wall of the right wing. The rear of the house includes a single-storey attic extension, constructed with a timber frame on a limestone rubble plinth. Inside the former 16th-century open hall, which is to the right of the entrance, is an arch-braced roof; the inserted 17th-century ceiling features quartered and stop-chamfered beams and joists with run-out stops. Inventories indicate that three rooms were added to the house between 1582 and 1627. A tall limestone rubble wall extends approximately 40 metres to the right, connecting to The Black Horse Public House.
