Description
Lock's Cottage is a house dating from the early 17th century. It is constructed of coursed limestone rubble and features a gabled concrete tile roof with stone ridge stacks. The building has a three-unit lobby-entry plan and is one storey with an attic, presenting a three-window range. The doorway has a timber lintel above it and is stepped-ovolo-moulded, leading to a 17th-century plank door with iron fittings. A 20th-century stone porch has been added. The windows have timber lintels and include a late 19th-century two-light casement in the gabled dormer.
Inside, the room to the right features a keyed and chamfered stone fireplace along with stop-chamfered beams. The room to the left has a stepped-ovolo-moulded beam and stop-chamfered joists with scribed soffits, as well as a large stone lintel over a stone fireplace. The lobby contains a 17th-century panelled door. The roof is a collar-truss type with butt-purlins, and the room on the right is open to the roof, which is ceiled with a stop-chamfered beam to the left. Overall, the cottage showcases a good example of 17th-century vernacular interior design.
