Description

The barn and cart shed, located 60 meters northwest of Wissington Grove, is a Grade II listed structure. The barn dates from the late 18th century, while the cart shed is from the early 19th century. Originally separate, they have been joined by later infilling that connects to the cart shed range. The buildings are timber framed and mostly covered with tarred weatherboarding, set on high red brick plinths due to the sloping site. The roofs are clad in corrugated iron and asbestos.

The barn features a central cart entry with a gabled porch on the east side, although these entries have been boarded over and replaced with a single door and window. There are open lean-tos on the east side. The cart shed consists of four bays with a loft above.

Inside, the barn has seven bays and a primary-braced frame made up of very heavy components that have been reused from a 15th or early 16th century building. Some of these components display roll and ogee moulding, while others have concave sides that suggest brick infilling. The barn includes reused tie beams that are knee-braced to the wall posts, with two beams being slightly cambered and featuring peg holes for crown posts. The roof is a clasped purlin type without principals, and the rafters show housings for collars, with all components being reused. An upper floor was inserted in the 1940s.
