Description

This is a barn and attached cart shed located about 30 yards west of The Farmhouse. It dates from the 17th century, with alterations and additions made in the mid-19th century. The structure is timber-framed with brick infill and some weatherboarding, sitting on a brick plinth, and features plain tiled roofs.

The barn consists of three framed bays that run roughly north to south, with a central wagon bay that has opposed cart entries and double doors. The framing includes three panels from the sill to the wall-plate, long straight braces in the lower corners, and a collar and tie-beam truss with two collars, supported by four struts to the lower and two to the upper at the north gable end. The south end wall has been rebuilt in brick with header ventilation patterns. There are two intermediate trusses with a single collar and raking struts in the lower corners, and two tiers of trenched purlins.

At the north gable end, there is a single bay framed addition that has two levels, with two panels from the sill to the wall-plate, long straight braces in the lower corners, and a collar and tie-beam truss with two struts at the north gable end. The east elevation of this addition has been rebuilt in brick and features a central three-light wood-mullioned window flanked by two doors with cambered heads.

The cart shed, which is attached to the south gable end of the barn, dates from the 19th century and is constructed of brick with a plain tiled roof. It has four bays, with pilaster buttresses at the divisions and diaper ventilation patterns in the side walls. The south gable end has a large cart entrance with some weatherboarding above. Inside, there is a king-post truss at the gable end and three similar intermediate trusses. The adjoining 19th-century stable block to the northeast is not of interest.
