Description
Wellbrook House is a 17th-century farmhouse, subsequently altered in the mid-19th century and mid-20th century. It is timber-framed with painted brick and rendered infill, brick replacement walling and refacing, and plain tiled roofs. The building is arranged in an L-shape. The main section has two-and-a-half bays oriented north/south, with a large chimney and brick ridge stack between the two main bays. A single-bay cross-wing projects to the south, and an intersecting service wing of approximately four framed bays is located to the north. The house is two storeys high. The timber framing features four panels from sill to wall-plate, with short straight braces in some upper corners. Collar and tie-beam trusses with two struts are visible at the gable ends of the service wing. The east-facing entrance elevation has a 2-light casement with a cambered head on the ground floor of the main part, a long round-headed stairlight, and a 3-light casement on the first floor. A lean-to porch to the right has a 2-light casement and a 20th-century door, extending at right angles along the south side of the service wing, where it features two large 4-light ground-floor casements and a 20th-century door. The south cross-wing gable end has a ground and first-floor 3-light casement with cambered heads. The interior was not inspected, but the framing of the south cross-wing remains largely intact, although the south wall-frame of the service wing has been removed. A 19th-century single-storey addition joins the north-west end of the service wing, and there is a large 20th-century extension at the east gable end. The house stands on a former moated site, with the remains of the moat visible approximately 60 yards to the east.
