Description

Crumpfields Farmhouse is an early 17th-century farmhouse with alterations from the mid-18th century and mid-19th century. It is timber-framed with brick infill, set on a sandstone base, with some parts rebuilt and refaced in brick, and has plain tiled roofs. The farmhouse comprises a hall and a cross-wing. The hall part, aligned roughly north/south, was rebuilt in brick and consists of two bays. A single bay timber-framed wing extends to the rear of the north bay. The cross-wing is at the north gable end and is also timber-framed, with two bays. A large chimney with a brick ridge stack is located at the junction of the hall and cross-wing. The farmhouse has two storeys and an attic, with a two-course band marking the division between the ground and first floors of the hall. The north side of the cross-wing exhibits framing with four panels from the sill to the wall-plate, and two rows of panels at the first-floor level to the rear. The roof structure incorporates collar and tie-beam trusses with struts; the cross-wing trusses have long struts with rails and a V-strut at the apex. The east front elevation of the hall part has a 3-light and a 2-light casement window on the ground floor, and two 2-light casement windows on the first floor, all of which are 20th-century insertions into smaller openings with cambered heads. The cross-wing gable end has a 3-light casement window on both the ground and first floors, an attic light, and the main entrance, which has a ledged and battened door. The interior includes a large fireplace in the ground floor of the east bay of the cross-wing, and some original doors have been retained. A 19th-century outbuilding adjoining the cross-wing to the north-west is not of special architectural interest.
