Description

Lower Grinsty Barn is a barn and shelter shed that has been converted into a house. It dates from the early 17th century and was restored and converted in the late 20th century. The structure is timber-framed with rendered infill on a brick base and features plain tiled roofs. It is arranged in an L-shape, with the barn section consisting of two framed bays aligned east to west, and a framed lean-to at the east gable end. The shelter shed section has four framed bays adjoining to the southeast. The building is part two storeys and part single storey.

The barn has three panels from the sill to the wall-plate and collar and tie-beam trusses with raking struts. The shelter shed has two rows of square panels from the sill to the wall-plate and tie-beam trusses with raking struts. The west front elevation mainly features 20th-century square single-light casements. The gable end of the barn section on the left has windows on both the ground and first floors. The south side of the barn has two ground floor windows, a first floor window, and a lean-to porch with a 20th-century door, along with three skylights in the roof. The shelter shed part has five windows, a glazed door, and a pair of double doors at its southern end. The buildings originally belonged to Lower Grinsty Farmhouse, located about 30 yards to the southwest, and are included for their group value.
