Description
Sheepbridge Barn and Cow Shed is a former barn and shelter shed that has been converted into a detached house. It dates from the early 19th century and is constructed of random rubble limestone with ashlar columns in the shelter shed and stone slate roofs. The building likely originally featured a five-bay barn with porches on the east and west sides, outshuts to the east, and south-facing shelter sheds.
The barn has a parapet gabled porch topped with a ball finial and glazing in what was once a doorway. There are some inserted casements in the outshuts and on the north gable end. The barn's ends are also parapet gabled and feature 20th-century gabled chimneys. A catslide porch on the west side has glazed infill, and the barn includes many triangular vents, some of which have tall windows inserted below, creating a triangular head.
The shelter shed consists of a long row of shelter sheds supported by 11 circular stone columns with flat capitals and tall cushion-type bases. Although the interior was not inspected, it appears to be a very skillful conversion of a typical post-enclosure barn. Local tradition suggests that the columns may have Roman origins. The shelter shed is illustrated in O. Cook's book, "English Cottages and Farmhouses," published in 1982.
