Description

Cruise Hill Farmhouse is a farmhouse, now a house, dating from the 17th century with alterations and additions from the mid-19th century. It is timber-framed with brick and some rendered infill on a brick and sandstone base, topped with plain tiled roofs. The building has a hall and cross-wing plan; the hall section likely consists of two framed bays and a cross-passage bay aligned east to west. There is a large external chimney with offsets at the rear of the westernmost bay. The intersecting cross-wing at the west end also has two framed bays and features a large external chimney with offsets at the rear, along with another external chimney on the rear side elevation. The rear chimneys have a sandstone base and include some 17th-century brickwork. The farmhouse is two storeys high and has a cellar. The framing consists of three and four panels from the sill to the wall-plate, with short straight braces in the upper corners. The collar and tie-beam trusses throughout have either three or four struts beneath the collar and a single strut in the apex.

On the south front elevation, the windows are 19th-century casements, with the main part featuring a 3-light and a 2-light window on both floors, along with a 19th-century ledged and battened entrance door. There is a small stack at the right end of the roof pitch. The gable end of the cross-wing has a 3-light casement window on both the ground and first floors. The interior was not inspected. The ground slopes down towards the east end of the house, where there is a door leading into the cellar. At the time of the survey in June 1985, this gable end had recently been restored, and new windows had been inserted.
