Description

Upper Hunt End Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 17th century, with alterations and additions made in the mid-18th century and mid-19th century. It was restored in the late 20th century. The building is timber-framed with rendered infill on a sandstone base, and features brick replacement walling and additions, topped with plain tiled roofs. The layout follows a hall and cross-wing plan; the hall, which has been rebuilt in brick, consists of two bays and is aligned northeast to southwest, featuring a large chimney at the end of the northeast bay. The cross-wing at the southwest end has two framed bays and a central chimney with a brick ridge stack. The farmhouse is partly two storeys and attic, and partly two storeys with a dentilled eaves cornice.

The framing includes four rows of panels from sill to wall-plate, short straight braces in the upper corners, and collar and tie-beam trusses with two collars. There are four struts to the lower collar and two to the upper collar, with a concave V-strut in the apex. On the northwest front elevation, the hall part has a ground floor three-light casement window with a cambered head, a two-light casement window on the first floor, and a gabled half-dormer with a two-light casement. The main entrance, located to the right, features a 20th-century door with a cambered head. The cross-wing gable end has a three-light casement window on both the ground and first floors, as well as an attic light. The interior, which was the only part inspected, retains a large fireplace with a brattished beam. There are later additions to the rear of the hall part.
