Description
Lowbourne is a farmhouse, now a house, dating from the early 17th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th century and late 20th century. The building is timber-framed with rendered infill, a brick plinth, and replacement walling, topped with plain tiled roofs. It has a hall and cross-wing plan, featuring a single framed bay hall aligned east to west. There is a large external rubble chimney with a brick stack at the west gable end, which is now enclosed by a lean-to addition on the south side. The cross-wing consists of two framed bays located at the east gable end. The structure is single storey with an attic that includes dormers. The framing consists of three panels from the sill to the wall-plate, with collar and tie-beam trusses supported by two struts and a V-strut in the apex. All windows are 20th-century casements.
On the south front elevation, the hall features a 2-light window on the ground floor, a gabled dormer with a 2-light window, and a 20th-century gabled timber porch to the left with a six-panelled door. The cross-wing gable end has a 3-light ground floor casement and an attic light, along with a 20th-century brick stack to the right of the roof pitch. Inside, the main ceiling beams are stop-chamfered, and the hall ceiling beams are very substantial and well-detailed. There is also a lean-to addition at the west gable end.
