Description

Pages Cottage is a house dating from the early 17th century that was restored in the late 20th century. It features a timber-framed structure with rendered and brick infill, a brick plinth, and a machine-tiled roof. The building consists of three framed bays arranged in a north-east to south-west alignment and has a large chimney with a brick ridge stack situated between the two south-westernmost bays. A 20th-century wing, also comprising three framed bays, is attached to the north-west side of the south-west bay and includes an external chimney at its gable end.

The cottage is a single storey with an attic that has dormers. The framing includes three panels from the sill to the wall-plate, and the south-west gable end features a jettied upper floor supported by a chamfered bressummer on shaped brackets. There are short straight braces in the upper corners of the jettied floor, collar and tie-beam trusses with four struts to the collar (two of which have been replaced by windows at the south-west gable end), and a V-strut in the apex at the north-east gable end.

On the north-east entrance elevation, the gable end of the original part to the left displays plank weatherings at the girding-beam, tie-beam, and collar levels, along with a square ground floor and attic light. A lean-to structure beneath a catslide roof is positioned at the angle with the 20th-century wing and features two square windows. The 20th-century wing includes two ground floor 2-light casements, two gabled dormers with 2-light casements, and a lean-to timber-framed porch to the left that continues the roof-line of the lean-to addition to the original part, complete with a 20th-century door and a square light. The gable ends also have attic lights. The south-east elevation is adorned with three gabled dormers, each featuring 2-light casements. The building was undergoing restoration at the time of the survey in March 1985.
