Description
Black and White Cottage is a house dating from around 1600, which was restored in the mid-20th century. It features a timber-framed structure with painted brick and rendered infill, topped by a cedar shingle roof. The cottage has three framed bays aligned north to south and includes a large chimney at the rear of the central bay with a brick stack. It is a single storey with an attic that has dormers.
The framing consists of three panels from the sill to the wall-plate, with short straight braces in some upper corners. At the north gable end, there is a collar and tie-beam truss with two struts, while the south gable end features a tie-beam truss with lattice struts.
On the west front elevation, there are two ground floor 2-light casement windows, a 2-light stair window in the central bay, and two flat-roofed mid-20th century dormers with 2-light casements. The central area has a 20th-century lean-to brick porch with a square light in the front elevation and a door on the left side. The attic lights are located in the gable ends. Inside, the roof and most of the framing remain intact, and there is a 20th-century single-storey extension at the rear.
