Description

Upper Town Farm is a farmhouse dating to the 17th century, with alterations in the 18th, mid-19th, and early 20th centuries. It is partly timber-framed with brick and rendered infill and replacement walling on a rubble base, and partly brick, with plain tiled roofs. The building is arranged as a hall and a cross-wing; the hall section, of three framed bays, runs roughly north/south and features an external brick chimney and the remains of a bread oven at its north end. The two-bay cross-wing is situated at the southern end and has a large brick chimney on its south side. The farmhouse has two storeys and an attic.

The hall section has three square panels from sill to wall-plate, with long straight braces across some lower corners. A tie-beam truss with lattice struts is located at the north end. The cross-wing retains two rows of panels at first-floor level of the west gable end, and a collar and tie-beam truss with struts above.

The west front of the hall section has two two-light casements and two rectangular windows on the ground floor, a two-light casement and a rectangular window on the first floor, and a 20th-century flat-roofed dormer with a three-light casement. The main entrance, to the right of centre, is under a timber porch with a curved corrugated iron canopy, containing a partly-glazed door and transom light with two glazing bars. The cross-wing gable has a three-light ground floor casement, a two-light first floor casement, and an attic light. A substantial 20th-century addition is located to the rear of the cross-wing.
