Description

The houses at 3-5 East Ascent, St Leonards, were built around 1830 as a row of three similar properties, stepped to follow the upward slope of the hill. Each house is two storeys high with a basement. They are three windows wide. The facades are stuccoed, with number 4 painted, and number 3 finished with pebbledash. Architectural details include parapets, cornices, and horizontal bands at the sill level of the first-floor windows. The window architraves are moulded, although those on number 3 are missing. The ground floor windows are round-headed, with number 3 having an added impost band. Central enclosed porches feature parapets, cornices, round-headed arches, and rustication. The windows are sash windows, some with vertical glazing bars. Number 5 has basement area railings. The roofs are slate. Numbers 1 to 5 form a group.
