Description

Masonic Hall, built around 1829 by James Burton, was originally used as subscription rooms. The building is designed in the style of a Doric temple, featuring a portico supported by four giant fluted Doric columns and an entablature with a pediment. Flanking the main structure are later 19th-century projecting lower two-storey wings that have curved corners, rusticated stucco, and a parapet. Each side of the hall includes one-storey aisles topped with a cornice and parapet, which contain seven sash windows with glazing bars set in shouldered moulded architraves with keyblocks. The entablature wraps around the main temple, which has a pediment and four giant fluted engaged columns at the north end.
