Description
4 West Ascent is a building dating from around 1830, designed by James Burton. It is half of a pair that originally formed a terrace, with the other half being No 3, which has lost its top storey and has altered windows. The building is finished in stucco and features a parapet and cornice, with a slate roof. It has three storeys and a basement, with a one plus one window arrangement, where the right-hand window is recessed and was originally part of a central recess. The windows are sash style without glazing bars and are set in moulded architraves. The ground floor features a cornice, while the second floor lacks an architrave but has a wide cill band. There is an iron balconette on the ground floor window, and small windows on the right side of the first floor are adorned with a cornice on consoles. The ground floor has a projecting pilastered doorway with an entablature and cornice, accessed by steps. This building is part of James Burton's layout of St Leonards.
