Description

Nos. 1 and 2 East Ascent, part of James Burton’s layout of St Leonards, date from around 1830 and were originally conceived as a single unit. The building is stuccoed with a slate roof and extends to two storeys and a basement. The central three-window block rises higher than the two projecting wings, which each feature one arched window and one smaller rectangular window on their upper floors. A central ground floor verandah, supported by four Ionic columns and featuring an entablature with iron railings to No. 1, is present. The central first-floor windows are set within deeply moulded architraves, the central window being blind with associated cornices. The windows are sash windows, some with glazing bars. Nos. 1 to 5 East Ascent form a notable architectural group.
