Description

This is a terrace of four houses, numbered 9 to 12 Maze Hill, built in 1832 as part of the original design for St Leonards by the architect James Burton. The houses are an example of Tudor Gothic style. They are constructed in stuccoed walls, built as a single composition, and comprise four storeys and a basement. The terrace is six bays wide, with three projecting bays incorporating triangular gables. Single-window bays are positioned between the projecting bays and on their outer sides, with shaped gables above those in between. The central gable extends on the first floor, supported by brackets. The houses have canted oriel windows on the second floor of the projecting bays and on the first floor of the recessed central bay. Other windows are casements, with dripmoulds above those on the first and second floors. The doorways have four-centred arches; those of numbers 10 and 11 are combined into a single arch leading up ten steps. The doors have vertical cover-moulds. Slate roofs finish the building. Numbers 9 to 13 Maze Hill are designated as a group.
