Description

No. 4 Church Street is part of a pair of houses dating from the late 17th century to early 18th century. It is three storeys tall with a basement, built of brick on a projecting plinth. The building features painted stone strings at the first floor and first floor cill levels, along with a moulded and denticulated cornice above the first floor windows. The second floor is rendered, and the roof is covered with old tiles.

The left bay of the building projects 4.5 inches and has the string and cornice continuing around it. There are two narrow windows and a panel on the left side of the second floor, three narrow windows on the first floor, and two narrow windows on the right side of the ground floor. All windows have central glazing bars.

To the left, there is a six-panelled door topped by a three-paned rectangular fanlight, set within a painted stone doorcase that features an architrave surround, a plain frieze, and carved console brackets that support a cornice which breaks forward over the brackets. The basement has one window, and there are 18th-century wrought iron railings.

No. 4 Church Street is part of a group that includes Nos. 4 to 7 (consecutive), the Church Rooms, Nos. 12 and 13, and the cobble sets in Church Street.
