Description
Market Cross House is a building dated 1687, located on the east side of High Street. It is a two-storey structure with an attic, constructed from a timber frame with stuccoed infilling. The building is set on a considerable cant and has been altered in the 18th century. It features flat eaves and a hipped old tile roof. The front of the building has a single bay on both the east and west ends. The west front includes an attic window that breaks through the eaves, a flat angular bay on the first floor, and an altered projecting shop on the ground floor. This shop has a half-glazed 18th-century door to the left and a three-light window beneath a small pent roof. The building is picturesque and is part of a group that includes Nos 4 to 50 (consecutive), No 1 Castle Hill, Market Cross House, The Town Hall, and No 52.
