Description

Nos 12 and 13 Church Street date from the late 18th century and are a pair of four-storey buildings with a basement. They are constructed of brick with a painted string course marking the first floor level and a wooden modillioned cornice above the first-floor windows. A parapet sits atop the building, finished with a stone coping. Each house has two windows flanking a central brick panel on the second and third floors. The first floor features a wide segmental bay with three curved sash windows, narrow flanking pilasters, a plain frieze, a string cornice that continues around the bay, and flush-panelled aprons. Three large composite roundels depicting lion masks and foliage are arranged symmetrically on the first floor, one in the centre and the other two flanking the bay. The ground floor has two windows and a central doorway grouped with the adjoining property. The front door is six-panelled, with a semi-circular fanlight containing radiating, concentric, and wreathed glazing, set within an arched brick opening. A single four-light sash window is located in the basement, set under a pavement grille. Nos 4 to 7 (consecutive), The Church Rooms, Nos 12 and 13, and the cobble sets in Church Street form a notable group.
