Description

No. 308 on Rochester High Street, built around 1800, is a shop that was originally constructed as a bank. The building features a stuccoed ground floor and painted brick above, topped with a hipped Kent-tile roof. It stands three storeys high with an attic and has a five-bay ground floor. The upper floors consist of a single bay with tripartite windows.

The elaborate ground floor bays include two 12-pane sash windows with glazing bars, although the lower sashes now contain plate glass. At the west angle, there are a pair of Tuscan Doric pilasters with bases and capitals, along with a frieze, cornice, and brackets. The central entrance features a two-leaf, six-panel raised and fielded door with a segmental arch, complemented by a six-panel fielded door with a wreathed knocker and a plain over door light, which provides access to the house above. A similar door on the west side leads to a yard and alley, forming the fifth bay of the facade.

On the first floor, there is a single projecting segmental bow with a fielded wooden dado, flanked by three windows that have architrave strip divisions, featuring eight-pane outer sashes and a twelve-pane central curved sash. The flat roof is adorned with an urn. The second floor contains one tripartite window with a six-pane center and four-pane outer sashes, set under a segmental rubbed brick arch. The building has a parapet, a single dormer, and one stack, with a deep build back along the plot that includes tripartite sashes at the rear.
