Description

A pair of houses at 300, 300A and 302 High Street, Rochester, dating from the mid-18th century. Constructed with Flemish bond red brick and a Kent tile roof, the buildings have a double-depth plan and end gable stacks. The symmetrical front elevation is arranged over three storeys, with four bays. It features tripartite, three-storey canted bays. These have a central 12-pane sash window and outer 8-pane sashes to the ground and first floors, and a 6-pane centre window with 4-pane outer sashes to the second floor. Projecting wooden architraves with cornices are present over the ground and first floor windows. Original sashes remain throughout, except for those on the ground and first floors of number 300. Between the canted bays, the central windows are sashes set in reveals, topped by rubbed brick flat arches – 12 panes to the first floor and 6 panes to the second. Two doorways, approached by flights of stone steps, are separated by a central alley passage with an architrave surround and a glazed fanlight. Each doorway has a Tuscan Doric doorcase featuring bases, capitals, three-quarter columns, a panelled reveal, a triglyph frieze that projects forward over the columns, dentils, and a pediment. An eaves level wooden console bracket cornice is also broken forward over each canted bay. Stone capping tops the parapet. The interior has not been inspected.
