Description

Nos 296 and 298 on High Street are two houses that have been converted into offices. They date back partly to the 17th century but have been significantly altered in the late 20th century. The buildings are timber-framed with brick end walls and underbuilding, and they feature weatherboarding on the first floor, which was re-clad in the 1980s. The roofs are gabled and covered with Kent tiles. Each house has a separate roof and a front range with rear wings, standing two storeys tall with an attic.

The front of the buildings was entirely rebuilt in the 1980s and has a four-window range, arranged two over two. No 298 features a two-light hipped dormer. The first floor has 12-pane horned sash windows in revealed frames. The first floor is jettied and supported by corbelled brick piers. There are two shop fronts with barred windows. The rear wing includes a jettied second floor with a gabled attic room that has a two-light casement window, as well as a canted oriel supported by 17th-century caryatid brackets. The other windows are all renewed sashes in revealed frames and casements. The buildings have a ridge stack. The interior has not been fully inspected, but it appears to retain a few original features on the ground floor.
