Description
Anchor House is a house located on Rochester High Street, dating from the early 18th century, which incorporates an earlier structure that may be from the 17th century. The building is constructed of plain coloured brick with red brick dressings, and the roof material is not visible. It has a double-depth plan and stands three storeys tall.
The front of the house features a regular four-window range, with the right-hand windows being blank. There is a parapet with stone coping above. The windows are sashes set in revealed frames, with the left-hand sashes having eight panes and the others having twelve panes. These windows are topped with rubbed red brick arches that have shaped keyblocks. The second-floor windows also have rubbed red brick aprons.
On the ground floor, there is a tripartite segmental bowed window with pilaster divisions and a flat modillion cornice. To the left, there is a notable late 18th-century wooden doorcase featuring pilasters, a cornice, a pediment, and panelled reveals, with the top three panels raised and fielded. The six-panelled door has the top four panels raised and fielded as well, and it is topped by an oval fanlight with glazing bars. This entrance is approached by stone swept steps with a ramped iron rail.
At the time of the last survey in 1989, the interior was undergoing major renovation work, and some framing visible may date back to the 17th century, although a full inspection was not possible.
